Are you shopping for wedding rings? Congratulations! Now that you’re engaged, you’ll be planning your wedding and searching for your perfect wedding bands. But how do you know which wedding rings to buy? To help you during your wedding ring hunt, we’ve written this wedding ring guide. In this post, we’ll cover some must-know wedding ring shopping tips and give you an overview of the most popular wedding ring styles.

Wedding Ring Shopping Tips

Tip #1: Set a Budget

The first step toward buying your wedding rings is setting your budget. There are no rules about what your wedding ring budget should be, but we would say that you should have one, whether your budget is large or on the smaller side. Setting a budget allows you to shop within that budget and see all the options that are available to you.

To give you a general idea of what couples spend on wedding rings, know that the average amount spend in 2018 was $1,890. You don’t have to spend this much or this little on your engagement ring, however. If you want to be more conservative and spend less, you certainly can. Or, if you want something flashier and have the budget for it, you should feel free to spend as much as you want on your wedding rings.

Tip #2: Know Your Ring Size

Before you can buy a wedding ring, you’ll need to know your ring size. If you don’t know your ring size, we highly recommend getting sized by a professional jeweler (we are happy to size you in store) or ordering a metal, non-flexible ring sizer online. We do not recommend using any of the ring sizing “tricks” or “hacks” you may find online, as these often lead to very inaccurate sizing. Some types of wedding bands are challenging to resize, while others are impossible to resize, so it’s important to know your accurate ring size before you buy.

Tip #3: Consider Your Lifestyle When Selecting a Wedding Band

Style is important when selecting a wedding band, but so is comfort and practicality. A wedding band is something most people wear everyday, so you want to make sure the wedding band you choose will be something you’ll be comfortable wearing.

Wedding rings are designed to be worn everyday, so most wedding rings should be fairly comfortable. However, if you have a very active lifestyle, you may want to choose something particularly comfortable and durable. For example, you may want to consider getting a platinum or palladium wedding band, as those are the most durable types of precious metals. Additionally, you may also want to consider whether or not raised diamonds are something you’d be happy with. While many people love the glamour of raised diamonds, they can snag or catch on things. So those who don’t want to worry about that may want to choose a classic band or a diamond set band that has a more flush profile.

Choose Your Style: Wedding Band Style Guide

Once you start shopping for your wedding bands, you’ll notice that there are many different styles of wedding bands. To help you get a feel for the most popular wedding band styles, here is an overview of the most popular types of wedding bands.

Classic Metal Band

First up in our wedding ring style guide, we have the classic metal band. Generally, with classic metal bands, women tend to choose slimmer bands while men often prefer wider bands. However, you can choose whichever silhouette you prefer.

Classic wedding bands, including our delicate half round wedding band and half round wedding band, come in many different precious metals. Platinum and palladium are the most durable options, while yellow gold, rose gold, and white gold are still quite durable but offer more style variety.

Diamond Set Band

Diamond set bands add brilliance and beautiful detail to your wedding set. Among diamond set bands, you can choose bands with larger diamonds, bands with pave diamonds, and detailed bands with scattered diamond accents.

Engraved or Textured Bands

Engraved or textured bands can look vintage, classic, or quite modern, depending on the ring’s design. Engraved and textured wedding bands are a great way to add some style to your wedding ring, while also ensuring it’s still very comfortable.

Eternity Bands

Eternity bands are highly glamorous and luxurious. In this type of wedding band, diamonds cover the entire exterior of the band, creating an infinite (or, “eternal”) ring of light.

Mixed Metal Bands

For a modern, eye-catching look, you can choose a wedding band with mixed metals. Mixed metal bands can combine two metals, like the beautiful yellow and white gold wedding band pictured above, or can feature many precious metals.
